Thailand: a 21-day itinerary with a focus on the south of the country

This itinerary was designed for travelers who want to explore both northern Thailand – the mountains, temples, and nature around Chiang Mai—as well as unwind on the islands at a slower pace, without constant packing and rushing. For those who would like to spend more time in the mountains, I recommend the 21-day itinerary focused on Northern Thailand.


Days 1–3: Bangkok and Ayutthaya

Day 1: Arrival in Bangkok

  • Arrival at BKK or DMK
  • Transfer to the hotel (Grab / Airport Rail Link)
  • Light walk around the neighborhood
  • Dinner and a massage after the journey

Overnight: Bangkok

Day 2: Bangkok + Ayutthaya

  • Train to Ayutthaya (approx. 1–1.5 hours)
  • Sightseeing of the ruins of the former capital:
    • Wat Mahathat
    • Wat Phra Si Sanphet
    • Wat Ratchaburana
  • Evening: Chinatown or Asiatique

Overnight: Bangkok

Day 3: Bangkok → overnight travel north

  • Wat Pho
  • Wat Arun (boat crossing on the Chao Phraya River)
  • Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew
  • Evening: overnight VIP bus to Chiang Rai

Days 4–5: Chiang Rai

Day 4: Chiang Rai – temples of the north

  • White Temple (Wat Rong Khun)
  • Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten)
  • Black House (Baan Dam)
  • Evening: Night Bazaar

Overnight: Chiang Rai

Day 5: Chiang Rai and surroundings

  • Optional: Golden Triangle
  • Tea plantations around Mae Salong
  • Khun Korn Waterfall
  • Relaxed evening

Overnight: Chiang Rai


Days 6–9: Chiang Mai and northern nature

Day 6: Chiang Rai → Chiang Mai

  • Bus or van transfer (approx. 3–4 hours)
  • Check-in
  • Walk around the Old City
  • Wat Phra Singh
  • Wat Chedi Luang

Overnight: Chiang Mai

Day 7: Wat Pha Lat + Doi Suthep

  • Monks Trail hike
  • Wat Pha Lat – a hidden forest temple
  • Doi Suthep and city panorama
  • Lunch and afternoon chill at Huay Tueng Thao Reservoir

Overnight: Chiang Mai

Days 8–9: Nature around Chiang Mai

Choose 1–2 days from:

  • Doi Inthanon National Park
  • Sticky Waterfall (Bua Thong)
  • Elephant Nature Park (ethical sanctuary)

Overnight: Chiang Mai

Days 10–13: Krabi and Koh Phi Phi

Day 10: Chiang Mai → the south

  • Flight Chiang Mai → Krabi
  • Railay Beach (longtail boat)
  • Sunset

Overnight: Krabi

Day 11: Krabi → Koh Phi Phi

  • Ferry or speedboat (1.5–2 hours)
  • Walk around the island
  • Phi Phi Viewpoint

Overnight: Koh Phi Phi

Days 12–13: Koh Phi Phi

  • Boat trip:
    • Maya Bay
    • Pileh Lagoon
    • Viking Cave
  • Snorkeling, kayaking
  • Free time

Overnight: Koh Phi Phi


Days 14–15: Khao Sok (jungle)

Day 14: Koh Phi Phi → Khao Sok

  • Boat to Krabi or Phuket
  • Overland transfer to Khao Sok (3–4 hours)
  • Check-in at a jungle lodge

Overnight: Khao Sok

Day 15: Khao Sok – jungle

  • Jungle trekking
  • Canoeing or tubing
  • Wildlife observation

Overnight: Khao Sok

Day 16: Cheow Lan Lake

  • Full-day excursion:
    • Cheow Lan Lake
    • Caves
    • Swimming
  • Optional overnight stay on the lake

Days 17–19: Koh Phangan

Day 17: Khao Sok → Surat Thani → Koh Phangan

  • Transfer to Surat Thani
  • Ferry to Koh Phangan
  • Check-in
  • Yoga, massages, sunset bars.
  • Overnight: Koh Phangan.

Day 18: Koh Phangan – beaches and slow life

  • Bottle Beach
  • Haad Yuan / Haad Tien
  • Phaeng or Than Sadet waterfalls.

Overnight: Koh Phangan.

Day 19: Koh Phangan – Ang Thong National Marine Park

Full-day boat trip to Ang Thong National Marine Park (Mu Ko Ang Thong):

  • cruising among limestone islands
  • viewpoints
  • sea kayaking
  • snorkeling
  • Emerald Lake (Talay Nai).

Overnight: Koh Phangan.


Days 20–21: Return to Bangkok

Day 20: Koh Phangan → Bangkok

  • Morning at the beach
  • Ferry to Surat Thani
  • Overnight train (2nd class AC sleepers) or flight.

Overnight: Bangkok / in transit.

Day 21: Bangkok and departure

  • Khao San Road or nearby areas
  • Last-minute shopping
  • Transfer to the airport
  • Departure from Thailand.
